Sinus Lifting Operation

The procedure of surgically raising the sinus floor to increase the amount of bone that decreases in order to implant is called sinus lifting.

What is Sinus?

Maxillary Sinus is the name given to the anatomical cavities located on the upper jaw, close to the molars. The task of these gaps is to provide noise generation and reduction of head weight. In cases where the sinus cavities hang down, loss of bone volume occurs. These bone losses can be seen as a natural physiological process, but if implant treatment is planned, it can cause problems when sufficient bone height cannot be achieved.

Sinus grafting is used to fill the sagging sinus cavities and apply implant treatment to toothless areas. If implant treatment is to be applied to a patient who has a decrease in bone volume due to sagging of the sinuses, Sinus Lifting surgical intervention is applied first. Sinus Lifting procedure is performed professionally in our Side Dental Center clinic.

How is Sinus Lifting Applied?

How is Open Sinus Lifting Performed?

Open sinus lifting (sinus lifting, lifting) is a procedure that is often performed in the dentist's chair under local anesthesia. The sinus area to be removed is accessed through a small window opened through the mouth over the gum in that area. After the sinus membrane covering the inside of the sinus is raised to the desired level, bone powder and grafting are applied to the created space and the area is closed with stitches.

Sinus lifting is a painless, painless procedure that takes about 45 minutes with local anesthesia. In cases with sufficient bone volume, the implant can be applied in the same session and this procedure extends the time by 10-15 minutes.

How is Closed Sinus Lifting Performed?

Closed sinus lifting technique is applied in cases where the bone height in the jawbone is 4-5 mm or less. Under local anesthesia, the sinus floor is broken with special tools called osteotomes and the sinus is raised, and bone powder is placed in this cavity. Nowadays, this technique can be applied more safely by using a device called magnetic malet instead of osteotome. Even with this new device, magnetic malet, the closed technique has become applicable even in 2-3 mm bone thickness. Generally, implants are placed at the same time as this surgery. With the closed sinus lifting operation, which allows implants to be placed at the same time, the treatment process can be shortened by 6 months.

Why is Sinus Lifting applied?

If implant treatment is to be applied to a patient who has a decrease in bone volume due to sagging of the sinuses, Sinus Lifting surgical intervention is applied first. With this process, sufficient volume is created for the length and width of the implant that needs to be fully inserted into the bone. After obtaining sufficient bone volume, implant application is started. In implant treatments that require sinus lifting, it is extremely important to perform the treatment of maxillofacial surgeons, who are experts in the subject.

Sinus lifting is performed with local anesthesia and general anesthesia. After this operation, which lasts for about half an hour, mild pain may occur that can be relieved with painkillers. After the completion of the procedure, the desired bone tissue is expected to form in the area for a period of 4-5 months.

What should be considered for sinus lifting?

ü  Since sinus lifting surgery is a very sensitive and more complicated treatment than implant surgery, patients should take extra care after this operation.

ü  It is recommended that patients do not smoke for at least 10 days, avoid situations such as sneezing and coughing, and never close their mouths during this time.

ü  After the operation, sports such as running, football, volleyball and active activities such as dancing should be avoided for a certain period of time.

ü  Doing diving and getting on an airplane should be avoided for at least 1 month, as it will cause pressure in the sinuses.

ü  Oral hygiene should be observed, and the cleanliness of the operation area should be considered. Straws should not be used in liquid beverages.

ü  Spitting function should not be done for 24 hours. This function will create negative pressure and cause bleeding.

ü  After a sinus lift, it is recommended that the patient does not bleed heavily and does not get water in his nose.

ü  Excessive heat and direct sun should be avoided.

ü  Teeth can be brushed 24 hours after the operation.

How long after sinus lifting can implants be made?

Implants can be placed during the sinus lifting operation, or implant placement can be done with a separate operation 3-6 months after the sinus lifting procedure. This selection determines the amount of bone lost as a result of detailed examination, the amount of bone placed, the sinus lifting surgery technique, the length of the area to be loaded, the number of implants, length, and diameter.
