A check-up, which involves a thorough examination of your
teeth, gums and mouth, will prevent minor problems from becoming major ones. At
Side Dental Clinic , we recommend six monthly check ups with your
dentist, which when supported by a good at-home routine, will help to keep your
mouth healthy.
Nowadays, a regular examination uses both modern technology
and the dentist’s up-to-the-minute knowledge and skills, all in a virtually
pain-free environment.
A check-up allows your dentist to see if you have any dental
problems and helps you keep your mouth healthy. If any treatment is needed your
dentist will be able to advise you at this stage.
You should have a
regular dental visit at least every 6 months or as recommended by your dental
professional.
(or up to one year if you're under 18).
There are 2 parts to a regular dental visit – check up, or
examination and the cleaning, or oral prophylaxis.
At each check-up, your dentist will:
Examine your teeth, gums and mouth
Ask about your general health and any problems you've had
with your teeth, mouth or gums since your last visit
Ask about, and give you advice on, your diet, smoking and
alcohol use, and teeth-cleaning habits
Discuss with you a date for your next visit
The check-up should also include a careful examination of
your tongue, throat, face, head, and neck. This is to look for any signs of
trouble - swelling, redness, or possible signs of cancer.
At the first consultation, your dentist will want to find
out about your health, both oral and general. The dentist needs to be aware of
your medical background as it may impact the way that they treat and diagnose
issues – diabetes, for example, can increase the risk of gum disease and may
need different anaesthesia. Certain medicines, meanwhile, can cause dry mouth,
which can increase your risk of cavities. Importantly, all your medical
information will be kept confidential.
It’s also a good time to discuss any dental phobias – for
some patients, fear of the dentist starts in childhood after a bad experience.
The dentist will take this on board – in fact, just talking about these issues
can actually help relieve them.
After the first consultation, a full-check-up will take
place, followed by a thorough treatment plan.

Be sure to take care of your teeth and gums between regular
dental visits. Plaque is always forming on your teeth, but you can manage it by
brushing and flossing regularly. Here are some tips for good oral care at home.
Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Be sure to use a
toothpaste that contains fluoride.
Floss daily.
Use a mouthwash to help control plaque bacteria. This will
also help to keep your breath fresh.
