Sedation is a form of anxiety control to make treatment more pleasant for
you.Conscious sedation helps reduce anxiety, discomfort, and pain during
certain procedures. This is accomplished with medications and (sometimes) local
anesthesia to induce relaxation. It offers a modern alternative to general
anaesthesia for most dental procedures.
Conscious sedation is commonly used in dentistry for people who feel
anxious or panicked during complex procedures like fillings, root canals, or
routine cleanings.
You or your child can be made to feel more relaxed by 'relative analgesia'
(known as 'inhalation sedation'). This means breathing in a mixture of nitrous
oxide and oxygen ('gas and air'), which quickly leads to a pleasant and calm
feeling.
Our dental team will put you at ease by talking softly and explaining the
process to you in full. Although you may feel a little drowsy, you will stay
conscious at all times.
You're particularly nervous about pain during a dental treatment
You want to feel more relaxed during your visit to the dentist
Your child requires some 'happy air' to help them stay relaxed during
treatment
Benzodiazepine group of medications are considered safest for IV dental
sedation. Following drugs are generally used for achieving reliable IV sedation
for performing dental treatments,
Midazolam aka Verced
Fentanyl,
Triazolam
It's very effective
It is a very comfortable experience - you simply breathe in through a
nosepiece
It is completely safe. You can't overdose on gas and air.
There are no after-effects - you can drive home after about 15 minutes
(although we recommend you have somebody to accompany you).
No. you will not be totally asleep during your scaling, tooth filling or
wisdom tooth surgery under IV sedation. You will be in a relaxed state of mind
and not aware of your surroundings.
You will not remember all the steps of the dental treatment procedure and
this side effect is also helpful in reducing your dental phobia and anxiety
i.e. when you will not remember needle prick for providing numbness before root
canal treatment of your diseased tooth you will be comfortable visiting for the
next appointment in the dental office.
Yes. When performed by expert dentists like ourselves, this procedure is
completely safe. The gas and air mixture quickly leaves the body as soon as you
breathe in one or two breaths of ordinary air. There are also no adverse
after-effects to worry about.
Side Dental Clinic has many years of experience
in sedation.
Special training and expertise is needed for administration of IV sedation
in the dental office. A dental anesthesiologist needs to do a rigorous sedation
dental residency. Then the dentist must pass a test administered by the Dental
Board of Examiners to receive a license to provide IV sedation as a dentist. It
is better to consult an anesthesiologist if there is no trained sedation
dentist available in the dental clinic.
